AUSTIN, TEXAS, JACOB'S WELL VISITORS' GUIDE

In Austin, Texas, there is a natural artisian spring called Jacob's Well that hauntingly resembles a portal to the underworld. And it kind of is, in a way. The "well" actually descends even further, into a 4,341-foot-long cave with a 140-foot-deep lowest chamber! And to the shock of all of us who suffer from claustrophobia, some cave scuba divers have even descended there to explore for themselves. However, this is not a manual for that!

Most people enjoy Jacob's Well by swimming at the water's surface and cliff jumping into the pitch-black cavern. The ideal day excursion from Austin is to visit, and this guide will teach you everything you need to know.

VISITOR INFORMATION

The most crucial thing to remember when visiting Jacob's Well is that you MUST make a reservation in advance if you intend to swim there. Online preparation should be done in advance. Visitors without reservations are welcome in the Jacob's Well natural area, although they are not permitted to swim. This was strongly enforced with yellow wristbands when I visited.

You can visit and stay however long you'd like on that date and time after making an online reservation.

VISITING HOURS: 8am – 6pm

ENTRANCE FEE: None if you do not swim, $9 if you do.

SWIMMING RESERVATION: Book here.

SWIMMING AVAILABILITY: May 1 – September 30.

GETTING THERE

About 45 minutes' drive southwest of Austin, Texas, is Jacob's Well.

When you get there, a dirt parking lot will be there. If you have a reservation, you will be asked about it at the door, and if so, a wristband will be given to you.

After parking, you follow the route to a sign directing in the direction of the swimming hole.

Except for a few stairs, the short, generally flat pathway is made up of rock, gravel, and dirt. Flip flops might be uncomfortable, and wheelchairs and strollers probably wouldn't be able to use them.

TIPS FOR VISITING

1. PLAN AHEAD!

Make those swimming bookings in advance and think about arriving earlier in the day because it can get busy in the summer.

2. WEAR GOOD WALKING SHOES

Although the trail is not very challenging to travel, I can easily imagine it being the location where you might accidentally break a flip-flop or develop a blister.

3. COME WITH YOUR BATHING SUIT ALREADY ON

If you value privacy, then come prepared to jump in the water because there are no restrooms or changing areas besides the woods.

4. BRING WATER AND SNACKS

Since there aren't any drinking fountains or snack shops like in some parks, it's crucial that you bring enough of water with you. It can be VERY hot throughout the summer, and you don't want to become dehydrated.

5. BRING AND WEAR SUNSCREEN

There is a lot of sunlight, especially in the middle of the day, and the terrain is mostly open. After swimming, reapply sunscreen to further protect your skin.

6. AFTERWARDS, CONSIDER HEADING TO SALT LICK BBQ

If you’re looking for some of the best BBQ, stop at Salt Lick on the way back to Austin.

On my USA road trip, at every southern stop locals would claim they had the best BBQ.  And in my opinion, here it was true!

There is nothing else to it than that. Simply head over to Jacob's Well and jump in!
